Most people dream of owning a home with grand, vaulted ceilings. The reality is that most people end up owning homes that have very standard, unremarkable ceilings. If that’s the case then you should know that there are some clever and easy ways that you can create the illusion of tall ceilings without having to get rid of the second story of your home!
One of the best ways to trick people into thinking you have tall ceilings is to use your furniture wisely! Tall bookshelves and cabinets that reach all the way up to the ceiling will draw the eye upwards and create an illusion of height. This same tip can be applied to doorways, passageways, and fireplaces. These pieces of furniture benefit from reaching the ceiling, but another trick is to have low furniture. This is especially true for couches, chairs, and coffee tables. If the furniture fits the scale of the room then the space will feel bigger. Choose furniture with low backs!
If it’s not easy for you to change the furniture then there are still other ways to get the high-ceilinged look. Painting the ceilings, walls, and baseboards the same color helps open up the space. This allows the ceilings to blend in more naturally with the rest of the room. Full-height mirrors accomplish a similar task. Mirrors are already notorious for expanding the space of a room horizontally and they work the same way for vertical space! Vertical wall sconces and other vertical accents will also create an aesthetic tone that evokes the sense of height.
You may not have those high-ceilings you always hoped for, but you can at least make the room feel tall with these tricks!
