Whether you want to think about it or not, all of us are growing older! And as we get older we need to start thinking about ways to make our lives more comfortable in our homes. One of the best ways to help yourself out is to install elements in your bathroom that will make it easier and safer to use in the future. These ideas are great for people of any age and the addition of age-proof elements can actually increase the value of your home, too! Check out these smart, age-proof bathroom ideas!
A shower bench is a feature that everyone can enjoy. It’s practical, comfortable, and greatly decreases the possibility that you’ll have a slip and fall! Shower benches can be built-in or freestanding. You can even install water-proof seating to add an extra layer of comfort! And there’s no better way to wash yourself while sitting down than with a handheld shower head! Having a handheld shower head is a smart idea no matter what your age, but it’s particularly handy for seniors and those taking advantage of the shower bench. To ease the process of sitting down on the bench and standing back up you should also consider installing double-duty grab bars. These greatly increase the safety of showering and double as ledges for soaps and other shower products. They’re incredibly useful!
Outside of the shower there are some other less-discussed options for age-proofing the bathroom. There are several ways to increase basic comfort in the bathroom by adjusting the height of the fixtures. A vanity is typically 31.5 inches tall (minus the counter), but a comfort-height vanity is 34.5 inches tall. The comfort-height vanity will reduce the amount of hunching down and bending over you’ll have to do while washing up! There are also comfort-height toilets that raise the height by a couple inches to make it easier to sit down and stand back up. If you have the ability to do a more complete renovation then look for new flooring that’s more textured and slip-proof. Anything with grooves will usually be very slip resistant.
Age is something that we all have to consider. These bathroom improvements will make the transition more comfortable and safer! Check out all the ideas in the article below!
