Neatnik’s Nicole Anzia, a certified go-to organization genius, prefers to not to explain how to clean, but rather, how not to clean. You can piece together an individual strategy by avoiding these road blocks that stand in the way of clearing your clutter.
Her advice is framed the way many of us see organization: as a trip to the container store, with eyes open wide and wallets open wider. Don’t do that. Bad wallet. Bad wandering eyes. Close them and take a deep breath.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day,” she emphasizes. Throw things out and then discover what you need to organize the rest, and take it all one step at a time. The stamina needed to completely reorganize a single room (let alone a house or apartment!) is not something your average Joe or Jane has, and that’s okay. You are allowed to settle for completing small tasks, so long as you see them through to completion. For example, don’t leave bags of clothes out in another room; bring them to your car immediately so you can drive them to your charity of choice and they don’t clog up the next space on your list.
Follow even one of her suggestions and you’ll dread cleaning a little bit less.
