Thinking about remodeling your bathroom? Not so fast! There are lots of things you need to consider before you start tearing down the walls and gutting the fixtures. The bathroom might seem like the easiest place to renovate because it’s often so small, but there are many special aspects of a bathroom that homeowners overlook. Here’s what you need to think about before you start your bathroom renovation!
Let’s start with the nitty gritty – the plumbing. Most homes have 1 1/2 inch pipes for shower and tub drains. The problem is that many modern tubs and showers function much better or actually require a 2 inch pipe system. While you’re renovating it’s a smart idea to increase the size of the pipes to 2 inches. It makes a world of difference and doesn’t cost more than the standard size of pipes. Also, don’t skip upgrading the plumbing if you’re already renovating the bathroom. Chances are it needs it!
Modern showers have lots of elements that need to be considered, as well. You’ll need to think about the base of the shower, the floor of the shower, if you want to add a shower sill or bench, and whether or not you can include a window. All of these features are important. The shower floor is going to need traction, so it’s better to use smaller tiles that have grout lines that are more closely-spaced. They’re also easier to slope compared to larger tiles. The base of a shower is often just a boring beige slab. Don’t settle for boring! Consider a modern look using porcelain or acrylic. For the shower sill it’s important that it also has a tiny bit of a slope. If it doesn’t then water can pool on the surface and cause mildew.
Don’t forget about the lighting in your bathroom, either. Decide if you’ll need bright lighting for applying makeup or shaving, or whether you can get away with moodier lighting. Install a dimmer switch so that you can change the mood accordingly! Recessed lighting is also a smart idea for the bathroom.
