Making changes in a home can be a real struggle. Instead of dreaming about what your “next home” will be like it might be a better idea to start to figure out how you can make changes right now to make your current home a space that you love. But how can you make meaningful changes that you really love? Blogger Ashley from The Handmade Home shares some of her advice on the subject.
Step one? Ditch the rules. You might hear this advice all the time but it’s absolutely true. Your home should be a reflection of you and it should be the place where you feel the most comfortable. Don’t design or make changes that you think will please other people. Think about yourself first and how your home will best suit you and your family. Ashley’s home had a formal dining room that was used maybe once or twice a year. She felt pressured to keep it around, but why? It was hardly ever used and could be transformed into a much more valuable space that would be used every single day. And that’s exactly what she did by making it a room where she could homeschool her children. It was a smart decision that benefits everyone in the home.
Think walls are permanent? Think again! Don’t take the original architecture at face value. There could be some tremendous new ways to utilize your home that you never even imagined because there were literal walls in the way. Ashley created a walk-through closet system for her kids that’s spectacular. Two closets were back to back in different rooms, so she removed the wall and put new shelving on the sides of the closet. Now there’s a great new hallway and even better storage than before. This same philosophy can be brought to any other space in your house. Have a closed-off kitchen? See if there’s a way to open it up by taking out the walls!
Lastly, if your indoor space doesn’t have any wiggle room then make some changes to your backyard! A patio upgrade could be all you need to make your current home feel like your dream home. Take a look at the full blog entry to fill yourself with as much creativity as you need to make it happen!
