Choosing wall colors is one of the more enjoyable parts of the home design process, but it can also be one of the most challenging. Choosing exactly the right color can be a real headache. When faced with this challenge, sometimes it’s best to get creative and use more than one color in your design! There are some truly beautiful and clever ways to style a room using multiple paint colors. Here are some of the better examples!
Does your room already have a theme? Work with it! A child’s bedroom had a nautical theme so the homeowners decided to paint a wall in the bedroom to resemble a sailing flag. Simple, but very effective! How about a room that already has a picture rail along the wall? Common sense would dictate that the picture rail divides the two paint colors, yet a room can actually look surprisingly great when that logic is reversed. Try painting the walls and the ceiling the same color and passing right over the picture rail. Then use a second tone to paint the bottom section of the wall as if its wainscoting. It’s a crazy idea, but looks really great when done right! Don’t feel like going quite so far? Try simply painting the bottom of the room a different color as if it’s a wainscoting for a similar effect!
A second (or third) color is a great way to draw attention to certain features of a room. Have an alcove that will work better as it’s own zoned space? Paint it a different color! Have an interesting fireplace or other standout feature in the room? Bring even more attention to it with its own color. These colors don’t need to exist on the opposite end of the color wheel from one another to get dramatic effects. Try using different shades in the same color scale to create a dynamic effect that brings interest to the room without being overpowering.
Using multiple paint colors is an easy and valuable way to heighten the entire design of your home. The results are truly phenomenal and you’ll love the way it makes your home look. For photos and more examples, check out the full article below!
