Survival of the Fittest: Why Designers Must Adapt to Stay Relevant

The times, they are a changing. Every interior designer worth their weight in salt knows that they must embrace change if they want to stay in the business. Trends come and go, technology pushes design in new directions, and the tastes of the clients are always going to be different. Getting stuck in their ways is the worst thing a designer can do for their career.

Life and change are all about learning: learning from mistakes, learning by example, and learning how to push the envelope. Just because a proper school education has ended doesn’t mean that it’s acceptable to stop learning. Going to trade shows and networking with other designers will help keep skills sharp and styles up to speed.

Trends are always changing so an interior designer needs to change with them. No one wants to hire an interior designer who’s still suggesting shag carpeting. Keeping up with the times will keep the clients rolling in. This isn’t to say that an interior designer should jump on any trend that comes along. It’s important to always aim for a timeless look that won’t need an update after a year or two when the trend evaporates.

Technology changes so often that it really keeps interior designers on their toes. Knowing how to design a home to work with automation and all the modern entertainment gadgets will make you a highly-prized asset. Learning to marry technology to the design will take your skill-set to the next level.

An interior designer who chooses to stop changin is an interior designer who is choosing to retire.
