Remodeling a bathroom raises thousands of design questions and choices, but there’s perhaps no choice as significant as selecting the right tile. The problem is that there are thousands of tile options to choose from! It can seem overwhelming when you’re looking through all the style guides and trying to make thoughtful decisions. Thankfully that’s where Catherine Bailey, a creative director of a tile design company, comes in to help you understand the proper way to choose tile!
Bailey encourages people planning to use tile in their bathroom remodel to follow their intuition to help guide them toward a decision. The bathroom is a space that should feel good and comfortable for you. Create a mood board that can help you visualize the energy of the space. Use this mood board to establish the colors and the shapes that you’re drawn to and let them aid in your decision making process!
Some people are afraid to mix-and-match their tiles, but Bailey believe that it’s a good way to create visual interest and break up the space. Mixing-and-matching doesn’t have to be as extreme as choosing different colors and styles of tile completely. It can be as simple as choosing two different types of finishes for the same tile depending on its location in the bathroom. A matte-finish is great for the floor, but a glossy finish will look better on the walls. You can also take a tile you love and use smaller or bigger versions of it for the various areas of the bathroom!
Something that many people don’t consider when planning their tile is the grout. It’s not simply the glue that affixes the tiles to the surfaces. It also plays a major role in the style of your tile and your bathroom as a whole. Grout comes in many different shades and the one you end up choosing could dramatically change the appearance of your bathroom. White tile and a dark grout can create a high-contrast look that you love while a combination of white tile and white grout could provide a sleek, clean look. These choices matter!
As always, Bailey recommends choosing someone you trust to do the installation so that it all goes according to plan! Check out all her helpful tiling tips in the article below!
