How to Choose a Bathroom Vanity Without Guessing

The right vanity comes down to four decisions made in this order: size, configuration, style, finish. Get the size wrong and nothing else matters. A vanity that blocks a door swing, crowds the toilet, or dies 3" short of the wall isn't a vanity, it's a return shipment. Work the sequence below and you'll land on the right cabinet in about ten minutes. If the new cabinet is replacing an old one, our guide to installing a new bathroom vanity covers what to check before the plumber arrives.

Step 1: Size the Opening Before You Browse

Measure wall-to-wall, then subtract 2" of clearance from any side wall, toilet, or door frame. That's your maximum vanity width. Vanities run in 6" increments from 18 inch bathroom vanity through 84 inch bathroom vanity, with the largest primary suites stepping up to a 96 inch bathroom vanity. A single-user primary bathroom usually lands at 36" to 48". Shared primaries with two morning users need 60"+ and a double sink layout. Powder rooms and guest halves almost always sit at 24" to 30". Don't spec larger "because it looks nice"; a 48" vanity in a 54" opening reads crammed. Also measure floor-to-ceiling height if you plan to install a mirror or medicine cabinet above the vanity. Standard vanity height is 34" to 36" with top; add at least 4" for a backsplash, then your mirror footprint. This confirms your vertical proportions before you buy.

Step 2: Pick the Configuration

Single sink vs. double sink bathroom vanity: once you hit 60" width, go double if two people get ready simultaneously. Under 60", stick single so you keep usable counter space. Freestanding vs. floating bathroom vanity: freestanding hides plumbing and works over any floor condition. Floating requires solid blocking behind the drywall and plumbing roughed in at the correct height (usually 18" to 20" above finished floor). Vanity with top ships with a pre-cut stone top and pre-drilled faucet holes, which saves a stone trip but locks in the top choice. Cabinet-only (no top) is the move when you've already sourced custom stone or want a vessel sink over a slab. If you're replacing an existing vanity, photograph the plumbing rough-in before shopping. Note the drain centerline distance from the wall and the supply line locations. These three measurements determine whether a new vanity drops in or requires plumbing rework.

Step 3: Style and Finish Come Last

Match the vanity to the room's existing cabinetry, trim profile, and floor. modern bathroom vanity means slab doors, minimal hardware, matte finishes. farmhouse bathroom vanity leans on shaker fronts, exposed legs, and apron details. transitional bathroom vanity is the safest resale choice: clean lines that don't date. For finish, white and gray remain the highest-demand resale colors. Natural wood (white oak bathroom vanity, walnut bathroom vanity) is the current design-forward pick and photographs well. If you're choosing between two finishes, lean toward the lighter one; lighter vanities make small bathrooms read bigger, reflect more light, and don't show dust or water spots as readily as dark matte finishes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Buying before measuring the door swing. Ordering a vanity with top before confirming the faucet hole configuration (1-hole, 3-hole, 8" spread). Forgetting to account for baseboard thickness when specifying freestanding depth against a wall. Skipping the plumbing rough-in check on floating models. Not factoring freight delivery logistics: confirm driveway access and doorway width before ordering a 60"+ vanity, because some crates won't fit through a 30" bathroom door. Every one of these sends product back.
