Bathroom Medicine Cabinets
Medicine Cabinet or Mirror? The Storage Call
A medicine cabinet gives you hidden storage for daily essentials (toothbrush, razor, meds, skincare) without crowding the counter. For bathrooms with limited vanity drawers or small powder rooms with a pedestal sink, a medicine cabinet is almost always higher utility than a plain bathroom mirror. The tradeoff: the cabinet has visual depth and a visible frame that a frameless mirror doesn't. But what you lose in visual minimalism, you gain in function. A well-organized medicine cabinet holds 20 to 30 daily items behind a closed door, which means zero counter clutter.
Recessed vs. Surface-Mount
Recessed cabinets sit inside the wall between studs, typically with a 14" interior width (fits between 16" on-center studs). They look cleaner and project just the frame into the room. The catch: you need to confirm no plumbing, electrical, or HVAC is behind the wall at that location before cutting. Use a stud finder with wire-detection mode, or drill a small exploratory hole inside the planned cutout before committing. Surface-mount cabinets bolt to the wall face and project 4" to 6" out. Easier install, zero stud conflicts, but more visual bulk. For renters or homeowners who can't open walls, surface-mount is the only option and works fine aesthetically when the cabinet matches the vanity finish.
Sizing the Cabinet
Width should be 24" to 30" for a single sink, 36" or wider (or two smaller cabinets) for a double sink bathroom vanity. Height typically 26" to 34". Mount the bottom of the cabinet 5" to 6" above the top of the faucet, same as a mirror. Interior depth 4" is enough for toiletries; 6" fits perfume bottles and taller items. For a primary bathroom where both users store full skincare routines, go with the deepest interior available. A 6" interior medicine cabinet holds twice the product volume of a 4" interior with no change in wall footprint.
Features That Earn the Upgrade
Built-in LED lighting around the frame is the single highest-value feature. It turns the cabinet into a lighted mirror plus storage, eliminating the need for separate sconces or an LED mirror. Integrated defogger keeps a zone clear during showers. Soft-close hinges (standard on mid-grade units and up) prevent slams and protect glass shelves from shock. Double-sided mirrored doors (mirror on both sides, not just exterior) let you see the back of your head when applying product. Adjustable glass shelves are more flexible than fixed wood shelves and let you customize shelf spacing for tall bottles vs. short containers.
Single-Door, Double-Door, or Triple-Door
Single-door works up to 24" wide; beyond that the door swing is awkward and the door hits the sconce or side wall. Double-door is the go-to for 30" to 36". Triple-door is the premium choice for 48"+ widths and gives you a center viewing mirror even when side doors are open. For a triple-door cabinet, make sure the center mirror is wide enough to use as a primary mirror without opening the sides. If the center panel is under 14" wide, it's too narrow for comfortable daily use as the primary reflection surface.
Power Outlets Inside
Some cabinets include an interior 120V outlet or USB port. Extremely useful for electric toothbrush chargers, hair trimmers, and water flossers, since you don't have cords on the counter. Requires a 120V rough-in inside the wall cavity (plan with your electrician during framing or wall opening). This is the kind of detail that makes a bathroom feel hotel-level organized and is worth the incremental wiring cost during a remodel.
Install Notes
For recessed units: confirm the rough opening matches the cabinet's listed rough opening (usually labeled on the spec sheet). Add blocking between studs if needed so the mounting screws don't rely on drywall alone. Check for plumbing and wiring before cutting. For surface-mount: hit studs or use 75 lb-rated toggles. Level both directions before tightening mounting screws. Test door swing clearance against adjacent walls, sconces, or towel bars before marking drill holes.
